Cutting additive cost without changing the processing window
Masterbatch and compounding producer
The problem
Rising antioxidant cost was squeezing margins on a PP masterbatch line. Reducing the loading level was not acceptable because yellowing during extrusion had been a previous complaint.
What we proposed
We benchmarked a hindered phenolic antioxidant at two loading levels on their line, measuring yellowness index and melt flow retention over a 6-hour run.
Result
- Additive cost per tonne reduced while yellowness index stayed within the previous range.
- Colour complaints did not recur over the following two quarters.
- Supply switched to a regular quarterly schedule with stock held in Guangzhou.
