Full name & product positioning

Full product name: BENTONE B38 Organo‑modified Hectorite.
Conventional activated organoclay designed for low‑to‑medium polar organic solvent systems. It develops thixotropic networks with activator. Widely used in industrial anti‑corrosive coatings, coil coatings, refinish paints and printing inks to achieve pigment suspension, anti‑sagging and storage stability.

Key technical parameters

Chemical composition Organo‑modified hectorite
Appearance Off‑white to pale beige fluffy powder
Density 1.70 g/cm³
Moisture content ≤3.0 %
Loss on ignition  35‑39 %
325‑mesh residue
150 ppm
Physical form Fine powder
Standard package 25 kg / bag
 CAS No. 1302‑78‑9

Key benefits

1. Build stable 3‑D gel networks in low‑to‑medium polar solvents to restrain pigment/filler sedimentation and phase separation.

2. Excellent thixotropy: shear‑thinning for easy spray & brush application; viscosity recovery under low shear to deliver anti‑sagging for high‑build films.

3. Reduce substrate penetration on porous substrates, minimize pinhole defects and improve coating storage stability.

4. Good compatibility with alkyd, chlorinated rubber, long‑oil polyurethane and vinyl resins.

5. Versatile performance for coatings, inks, adhesives and greases.

Main application fields

Core applications: Industrial anti‑corrosive coatings, coil coatings, automotive refinish primers, high‑build solvent‑borne paints
Suitable for: Printing inks, wood coatings, adhesives, plastisols, release agents
Not suitable for: Pure high‑polar ketone‑ester systems, 100 % water‑based systems, food‑contact articles
